Jan 29 Conn Hill Tour cancelled

Due to lack of snow, this tour is canceled.
As of Wed, Conn Hill, Hammond Hill aren’t skiable but there are good reports on Bear Swamp conditions. Keep watching the email list for an impromptu outing this weekend.

Tour reports Jan 23-24: Highland Forest/Shindagin Hollow

Despite questionable ski conditions going into the weekend, both tours went well.

Highland Forest Jan 23rd:  12 in attendance (Marilyn, Cindy, Kristin, Jack V, Becca, Bente, Wendy, Bruce, Susan, Rich, Dave, Meena).  Wonderful wide groomed trails with double sets of tracks allowed for skiing alongside others and conversing.   We went out for a ski in the morning (divided into faster and slower groups), met back at the beautiful Skyline Lodge for lunch, then out again in the afternoon.  A very nice time was had by all.

Shindagin Hollow Jan 24th:  17 in attendance (including 2 teens), plus 3 dogs

Conditions were very good–spring skiing in January!  Thanks to the skiing gods for good snow, and to everyone who attended for being up for a bit of an adventure.

Saturday Jan 23rd: Highland Forest

The Highland Forest tour is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan 23.
I called them and they have a 2-5 inch base left after the last melt but says people are still going out. Let’s hope for another few inches before then.
It is $3 for a trail fee and might be $2 for parking.
The plan for the day is to have a morning and afternoon outing with a lunch break at the lodge between about 1215-1:15

Aim to get there around 10-1015 so you can be ready to ski at 10:30.

Directions:  (give yourself a good hour to get there – after 81, the roads are not fast going through towns etc.)
Put this address 1254 Highland Park Rd, Fabius, NY 13063 into your Google maps.
Take RT 13 to 281 through Cortland and get on I  81 North.
Get off at the Tully Exit and go east on Route 80/91
Continue on 80 east through Apulia Station and Fabius.
Turn Right on Highland Park Road.
Drive and park in the parking lot.

Car Pooling. Meet at the Dunkin Donuts on Route 13 in Dryden at 9am

1030 -noon Lesson:  (That means be on the snow at 1030)
We’re offering some lessons to beginners/advanced beginners.
**Please reply to the group leaders (cc’d in this message-not the whole list) if you are interested in being part of the lesson.**
Include if you are an adult or a child and if you’re brand new beginner or have some experience.

1030 – noonish open ski with one of the leaders. This ski no one will be left behind and will appeal to intermediate skiers or those who are willing to take it easy.
If there are some advanced skiers, they can form their own group.

About 1:15 – 3 ish. We’ll have another ski for a couple of hours.  Depending on the group, we might split into 2 groups based on ability.  One group will be advanced begginer/intermediate, and another will be more advanced.

CNSC XC Ski Wax Clinic: 29 Jan 2010

Postponed due to lack of snow and no lack of flu.

On Friday evening, 29 January, we will have the third CNSC Ski Wax Clinic.  We previously referred to this simply as the Wax Clinic, but last year one hirsute individual showed up in a bikini and was disappointed.  The fact that it was a guy didn’t make any of us feel any better either (though Jack says he always uses green klister in preparing for his Calvin Klein photo shoots.)

We will start at 6:00 PM and go until ~8:00 PM and will go over ski fit, overall theory of waxing, base prep, glide waxing, kick waxing and the perennially popular klister.  The object is to help those who would like to lift their xc game to the next level of performance…not necessarily racing, but a notch up from what’s possible on most waxless skis.

In order to fit into the time allotted, we can’t promise that every pair of skis will get waxed or that everyone will get to wax a complete set of skis, but we will have clear hands on demonstrations, provide some “try it” opportunities, and help people get started or get better at waxing for XC.

If you have a halfway decent or good pair of wax skis, bring them along (with wax removed) and we’ll buff them up.  If your skis started life with the 10th Mountain Division in the mid-fifties or have been used for pavement skiing, we won’t be able to do much with them. Afterward, presuming that the trails at the Swandrome behind our house are still in decent condition, we’ll ski for an hour (headlamp recommended) or so then have some snacks or wine and cheese.

Tour report: Interloken Trail Jan 17th

Fifthteen skiers including our birthday boy president and 3 dogs showed up for yesterday’s ski at the Fingerlakes National Forest lead by Marsha Zgola.  Conditions were much better than expected, there were no bare trail or wet spots.  They skied the Interlaken Trail from Picnic Road to Searsburg Road and back.  This is a very flat trail, excellent place for beginner skiers.  The ski went very well until until the rain came about 1/2 hour from the finish.  Hopefully everyone had a good time.  –  Jack Vanderzee
