Tour report: Virgil Mountain Jan 10th

January 11, 2010

Outing Report (10 Jan 2010):  Sundays outing on the DEC trails on the “backside” of Virgil Mountain was attended by 2 hardy skiers (Diane Kilts and Jack Vanderzee) and fearless leader.  Conditions were excellent on all trails with a wonderful track (approx 12 inch base) and a wind free winter wonderland of snow clinging to each branch and trunk of the the forest trees.   Could have stayed there all day, but hunger took control so after three hrs without a break of skiing ate a quick lunch in the car and went to The  Gatherings (formerly The Rafters) for a tasty Irish coffee and good cheer. — Greg Wooster

Virgil Mountain: Sunday Jan 10th

January 7, 2010

Sunday Ski: Jan 10.  Virgil Mountain/Valentine Road area: As to this Sunday?  Will probably have people meet at Hollenbecks at 10:00 AM then proceed to Valentine Road. (Unless people vote for 9:30 AM)  Ski up to chair lift area. Pop onto the down hill slopes a wee little bit and return via the road or woods depending on time and group mood. Bring lunch, and warm drink if inclined we’ll eat lunch on the trail perhaps up at the chair lift and enjoy the view.  Call: 277-7061 (h), or 253-4028 (W) for details.  I hope to ski about 3-4 hrs (or more) This all depends on weather conditions, but I can’t imagine it’ll be wet.   Greg

Tour Report: Hammond Hill Jan 3rd

January 3, 2010

Happy New Year,

Today was the first tour on the 2010 schedule, let by Daniel Blakeley and myself.  We had a whopping large group of 3 of us, with Jack Vanderzee as our sole attendee.  Truth be told, if I hadn’t committed to co-leading this tour I probably would have stayed inside all day, considering the foot of snow that had drifted against my front door as well as the slippery snow-covered roads.  But the Hammond Hill parking lot contained about a dozen other vehicles of die-hard skiiers, proving we were not the only dumb ones out there.

Once on the trail and skiing, it took only 5-10 minutes for my hands to regain some circulation and then the cold temps and wind didn’t seem too much of an issue.  Everyone who has skiid around here in the past few days knows that the snow conditions are absolutely primo, pretty much as good as they can get.  We kept our outing short today, going up Y1 to B1, doing the little lollipop and then back.  We were out for an hour and 20 minutes.

So if you haven’t already done so, now is the time to bundle up, get outside and ski, as we never know when temps will warm up and ruin our good snow.

Enjoy!
Kristin Schafer

January 9, 2010: Annual 10k Ski Race at Hammond Hill by CNSC

December 11, 2009

January 9, 2010
8:30 amto12:30 pm

cnscRacing

On January 9, 2010, the Cayuga Nordic Ski Club will hold its annual 10k ski race at Hammond Hill State Forest. A map of the race course is attached. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has approved this race and course grooming under a Temporary Revocable Permit. The trails will not be officially closed, but non-racers are asked to preserve the set tracks, yield the trail to racers as they pass, and to follow instructions of course marshals. It would really be best for all if the public would use alternate trails at least until all racers have started and then to ski in the same direction as the racers.

Racing will begin at 10:30 AM and all racers are expected to have started by 11 AM and to be off the course by 12:30 PM. The main race will be a 10k Empire State Games qualifier. The general public is invited to participate in a 5k citizens’ race, a 5k scholastic race, and a 1k kids’ race. Details and on-line registration are at nyssranordic.com. Day-of registration is from 8:30 to 10:00AM on January 9 at the ski hut. The entry fee for the citizens’ races will be $10, to cover costs and insurance. On January 9, 2010, the Cayuga Nordic Ski Club will hold its annual 10k ski race at Hammond Hill State Forest.
