Hike Details

Join us at the Lime Hollow Nature Center in Cortland to explore a popular nature center that offers cross country skiing on ungroomed trails.    Although their trail system is not large (a 2.25 mile loop), it is rated as easy to moderate so this is a good place for beginners or advanced beginners to get some experience.   A visitor center is available.   The trails meander through gently rolling hills, open fields, pine forests and by nearby ponds and streams.

For today's hike, plan to hike about 2 hours.  Wear appropriate footwear (water-resistant), dress in layers and bring water and a snack.   We will NOT meet at the Lime Hollow Visitor's Center parking area BUT we will park and meet instead at their parking area at 3270 Gracie Road, Cortland, NY (where the Lehigh Valley Railroad (now a trail) crosses Gracie Road).

Dogs are not permitted on Lime Hollow Nature Center grounds.    Hunting with guns is not permitted either but we suggest wearing orange just to be safe.

If the weather does not cooperate, we may need to cancel/postpone this hike.  Any changes in the hike will be posted here and on the Club's Google Group Email List.

Let's get ready for the ski season with a dryland clinic!   Join club members for a dryland workout or just come to watch.    Club members will demonstrate various roller ski equipment.   Traditional roller skis (both classic and skate) are designed for paved surfaces with small diameter smooth tread tires.  Some roller skis have brakes - others do not.   All terrain roller skis and other roller skis have larger diameter wheels - often with an aggressive tread - so they work better on uneven and unpaved surfaces.

You can bring your own equipment (roller skis, roller skates, etc) or you can try out 4 different kinds of all-terrain rollers skis and roller skates.   Bring your bike helmet, your NNN ski boots for Nordic skis, regular sneakers for roller skates.   We will have adjustable ski poles available.

For those who are interested, Jen Woltjen will lead a circuit of various strength and balance exercises to help prepare your for the upcoming ski season.   Her goal is to show you simple exercises you can do at home with little or minimal equipment.  Bring your ski/hiking poles and wear running shoes (or similar) if you wish to to join Jen in a cardio/upper body session on the Black Diamond Trail.

If the weather does not cooperate, we will postpone or cancel this workout.

Hike Details

Hammond Hill has about 20 miles of multi-use trails. It is popular for ungroomed cross-country skiing that is relatively close to Ithaca and Dryden.  The higher elevation results in significantly more snow than in downtown Ithaca.  Most of the trails are rolling hills and may not be suitable for beginner skiers. This hike will leave from the main parking lot on Hammond Hill Road.  Based on the group consensus, we will look at the map and plan a 3.5 to - 5 mile hike. The goal of the hike is to orient the group to the trails that are particularly suited to cross-country skiing as well as some navigation tips to avoid getting lost.

All Terrain Nordic Skiing Demo Day

When:  Saturday, July 22, 2023

Time:   1 PM to 3 PM

Location:   10 Slators Ln, Newfield, NY 14867

Contact: Nigel Dyson-Hudson cavensar@gmail.com

Click for more details.

Event Details

You are invited to a dryland clinic of various all-terrain nordic skiing equipment hosted by Nigel Dyson-Hudson, our very own guru of all things in nordic skiing equipment.    Nigel has over 6 acres of fields where he has tested and use various all-terrain roller skis and roller skates when  he does not have enough snow.

During the clinic, you will be able to try 4 different kinds of all-terrain roller skis and roller skates.  Please bring your bike helmet, your NNN ski boots for Nordic skis and regular sneakers for the roller skates if you wish to try them out.   He has adjustable ski poles.

Here is the demo equipment available: traditional roller skis, CatSkis, Jenex V2 Aero Roller skis.

Traditional roller skis are designed for paved surfaces with small diameter smooth tread tires. Some of them are also designed for only a skate skiing motion - they do not have a ratchet on the front wheel; they have two in-line wheels. All terrain roller skies and roller skates have large diameter tires, often with an aggressive tread, so they work better on unpaved surfaces.

NNN binding - so you use your NNN Nordic Ski boots with them.

CatSki  http://www.catskier.com  "The CAT ski work by the mini-roller ski gliding over the top of the bottom ski (Note: The bottom ski doesn't slide on the ground). After gliding to the front of the bottom ski on the mini roller ski, the skier will shift their weight to the other ski. This weight shift to the other ski allows the bottom ski to shoot forward with the aid of bungis and the cycle start all over again on the other ski." The CatSki discourages a sloppy Classic style - you need to have a solid toe plant.

Jenex V2 Aero XL150RC Classic  https://jenex.com/product/aero-xl150rc/  A tricycle wheel layout for better balance, the front wheel is ratcheting.

Full support binding - calf, ankle, foot, so you use a regular sneaker with them.

SRB XRS06 - a skate only off-road roller ski. It does not have a ratcheting front wheel so it needs to be used with a skate style.  https://rollerski.ca/product/srb-xrs06/

Skike - an all terrain roller skate with a ratcheting front wheel. I have the model with heel lift, the binding is hinged at the toes. Some Skike models have a no heel lift binding which is better for a skating motion.

Chase the Snow Ski Tour

Saturday, February 10, 2024

Time: To Be Announced via the Club Google Group Email List

Event Location: To Be Announced via the Club Google Group Email List

Chase the Snow Ski Tours normally take place on Saturdays.    The primary purpose of the Chase the Snow Ski Tours is to offer a ski tour to a popular destination dependent on the current snow conditions.   The destination and details of the ski tour may not be known until a few days (or even the day before) in advance.   We will post the tentative destination and details usually by the Wednesday night before the Saturday ski tour but the final confirmation may not occur until Friday.   Details of the ski tour will be posted to the club’s Google Group Email List.   Please make sure you are subscribed to the Google Group Email List so that you receive timely emails.

Click for more details.

The Chase the Snow Ski Tours are largely targeted to novice and intermediate skiers and are intended to be social and an opportunity to meet other skiers and explore ski trails.    When specific details are posted about the ski tour, the Tour Leader will provide more information about the destination, where to meet, length of tour, trail difficulty, etc.

The number of Chase the Snow Ski Tours that the club can offer depends enormously on those who volunteer to lead a tour.    We encourage you to consider leading or co-leading a tour.    More information about leading or co-leading a tour can be found here.   Please contact Jen Woltjen (jenrunner2@gmail.com) if you are interested in leading a tour.
